when i lived up near pittsburgh while going to school, i had a similar situation. but it wasn't due to the thermostats... i had a wall-mounted a/c unit. in one room.
well, i would sweat my ass all day at school. and because i was so broke after my roommate moved out, i could barely afford the electric bill, so i couldn't run it.
i would come home, strip down to wifebeater and undies, and sit there and sweat my ass off until the sun went down.
horrible experience. i will NEVER choose to live in a place again that does not have central heating and air. NEVER!
are you able to turn the thermostat off? maybe hit the breaker?
